The Joy of Pre-packing

I'm lucky enough to be going on a fantastic trip next week, one which I'll share more details about later on this week as it's directly related to Bombshell Beauty. I'll be flying out of town for three days which means...I have to figure out what to pack.

Please tell me I'm not the only freak in the world who pre-packs. As in, pulls out her suitcase and decides what to take with her based on how much will fit into that case. Pre-9/11, packing for air travel was no big deal. There were no checked baggage fees or crazy restrictions on how much body wash one could bring on the flight. Air travel, now, is less than desirable.

I'm not a checked-baggage girl by nature because I've found the baggage carousel to be a magnet for screaming kids and enough heat/humidity to transform my hair from great to Gilda Radner in 30 seconds flat. So I will be cramming two days' worth of outfits/shoes/accessories/makeup/toiletries into my carry on. I realize that two days' worth of stuff doesn't sound like much. But this trip is a fashion thing. So of course I need a reserve outfit or two. So, pre-packing is essential. I leave next Wednesday. And will begin to pre-pack this evening. I can't wait. The planning of a trip is always at least 30% of the overall fun.

If you have any wonderful tips or tricks for how to jam 99% of my closet into a Delta Airlines regulated carry on bag, please let me know in the comments.

  1. I don't have a plan..I'm horrible at packing lightly though I've improved - a lot.

I want more trip details! Come to NY, will you?

  2. You are too funny! I give you lots of credit for attempting a carry-on though - good luck! I am the queen of overpacking and super happy I am driving to the "big event" next week. I can bring all the stuff I want - ha!

  3. I'm going to be at that same event. Haven't given much thought yet as to what to wear- I guess it's a matter of laundry.

  4. With the ammount of traveling I have done the last 18 months, I have the packing in a carry suitcase tricks down. Here are a few of my secrets:

    1. Fold your clothes as few times as possible. You will be able to get double in your suitcase! For example...for a t-shirt, just fold it once horizontally. That should take up the whole length and width of the suitcase, but it will be really thin and you can stack and stack. Tank tops- don't fold at all if possible. Pants- just fold twice- legs together and then legs to waistband. You get the idea.

2- Be really selective on cosmetics. Pick just a few essentials. You can really save space. I have never regretted not bringing an eyeshadow, but I have regretted not bringing a certain top.

3- Bring pants you can re-wear. No one will notice if you wear black pants twice. More room for shirts :)

4- One some trips I have a little extra room in my laptop bag. This is a perfect spot for an extra pair of shoes. Speaking of shoes. I alwasy stuff any socks in my sneakers to save space.

5- All hotels have hairdryers. Leave that sucker at home.

6- When packing your shoes, think of them as puzzle pieces you pack at the very end. Sometime you will lay them sideways around your little items on top. Othertimes you will stick the on the sides with the heels straight down. Packing them first takes up too much space.

7- Whenever possible, wear your casual outfit on the plane traveling. If no one is goig to see you (that you are meeting or traveling with) you can double up that outfit.

8- As for the bag of liquids. I have never been scolded for having a lipstick or two in my purse, so try that trick. I have also found standing the bottles up in the bag gives you more room.

9- This last trick may sound a little stange, but it is a HUGE space saver in my liquids bag. I take a contact case and in one side I put my face wash and in the other I put my moisturizer. It is slick because those are huge bottles. I also just use hotel lotion. Too much bulk again.

With all of these tricks, I am able to pack for a Mon to Fri business trip...including work out clothes. Good luck!

  5. Holy crap with the good advice, Stephanie! I always pack my shoes first, but can see the error there. Will give your ideas a try.

If I ship you some of my stuff, will you drive it over for me Kimberly? Probably cheaper than paying a checked baggage fee, anyway. :)

I'm looking forward to meeting you, Magickal. We should compare itineraries, as I think we're both flying out of MSP.

And Kenz - yes! I would love to come to NY. It's been a loong time since my last trip. And now I have a new friend to visit! You should come to the Twin Cities, too. Come on - we're almost as exciting as NY.
